Active Adaptive Supports for Children – in hospice and in home:
We shared previously about programming plans to incorporate more physical activity, motor skills, mobility, and an outlet for athletic energies at Emily’s House children’s hospice – in hospice and in home. The recreation team is exploring opportunities to provide children with access to adaptive sports. Many of our children and youth are unable to manage “fine motor movements,” so we refer to these activities as “big movements.” Activities to include swimming, baseball, and more. A new collection of adaptive toys, is being incorporated into specialized one-on-one children’s programming at Emily’s House and through Emily’s House at Home. These new adaptive specialized toys and equipment enable possibilities for people with unique needs. Adaptive equipment increases inclusion for children admitted for respite care, as well as children with decreasing capabilities at end of life, based on recommendations from one of our Occupational Therapy Interns. Switch adaptive toys are specially designed to engage children with complex needs and help them have fun as they explore. With switch-activated toys, users can learn cause-and-effect, and build their comfort with new sensory input. Options support a wide range of sensory needs, motor capabilities, and ages.
Special thanks to our Emily’s House Rec Team for this action-packed photo shoot from a game of outdoor basketball last week.
