Adaptive Music Concert During March Break Camp at Emily’s House:
A highlight from our Emily’s House Music Therapist
Three Emily’s House at Home music therapy clients (from the community) had their first introduction to Emily’s House during a relaxed, adaptive concert designed intentionally for children with short attention spans and complex medical care needs. The children spent a few minutes in the music nook before the show started and had fun meeting the other children and families. All three of the new-to- Emily’s House families also met our nurses and our intake coordinator during the event, so it was nice to put some additional faces to the care that Emily’s House provides.
One child said Emily’s House was ‘very pretty.’
Another child brought their mom, brother, and cousin to join in the March Break fun.
And for all three children, this was the only outing they had for March Break. They were otherwise staying home. Hearing this highlighted how meaningful and important it is to create accessible spaces for our families to find community.
Another fun moment from the concert was when four of our Virtual Emily’s House Music Circle attendees recognized each other, even though they’ve only ever met online before. By the end of the concert everyone was playing a tambourine, drum, or shaker along with the band, so it felt like we were in a really big, in-person music circle at Emily’s House – which was special!
Special, thanks to Xenia concerts, children, families, volunteers and staff for making this cruise-themed March Break Camp so memorable!
