In Memory of Akin Fabunmi
Akin was a man who truly embodied gratitude, resilience, and purpose. Even through life’s most difficult challenges, he remained grounded in faith, led with love, and inspired everyone around him to live more fully and intentionally. He had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen, valued, and uplifted. Akin leaves behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and love. He touched countless lives, and those who knew him carry a piece of his spirit with them always.
After bravely battling brain cancer for nearly two years, Akin shared a perspective that will continue to guide all who knew him. He often spoke about “gratitude through a microscope”—a reminder that no matter how difficult life may feel, if you look closely enough, there is always something to be grateful for. It was a mantra he encouraged others to begin each day with, believing it was the key to living a more meaningful and fulfilling life.
Akin was deeply grateful for the resources provided to him through the Philip Aziz Centre for Hospice Care. As he faced the loss of independence, the support of volunteer Fred was invaluable. Fred was side by side with Akin in daily tasks and activities, providing companionship as his life drastically changed. Kristen provided music therapy, nurturing Akin’s love of music. This ranged from singing in the backyard to teaching him how to play the guitar, giving him motivation to keep pressing on. Sandy provided spiritual care. Her compassion and encouragement were comforting to Akin in the most challenging of times. The Philip Aziz Centre (PAC) provided Akin and wife, Karen, with services they didn’t even realize they needed, but ended up being some of the most valuable cornerstones of Akin’s final year. Akin’s family is moved by the impact of PAC. Any gifts made in memory to Akin will be dedicated to the Music Therapy and Volunteer program.
