National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21st

Emily’s House and Philip Aziz Centre recognize June 21st as National Indigenous Peoples Day: a time for Canadians to honour and celebrate the legacy, diverse cultures and exceptional contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. While these groups share similarities, each has its own unique heritage, language, traditions, and spiritual beliefs. Formerly known as National Aboriginal Day, this observance was established in 1996 by proclamation of Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc.
Celebrated on the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, this day holds deep spiritual and cultural meaning for many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities, marking renewal, connection, and celebration.
Emily’s House and PAC believe in the importance and imperativeness of providing a culturally appropriate and safe approach to care, and are committed to working to improve inclusion and eliminate barriers for Indigenous people in accessing palliative care.
We would like to also take this opportunity to acknowledge that the land, on which Emily’s House and Philip Aziz Centre operate, has for thousands of years been the traditional lands of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca, and most recently, part of the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit River. We are grateful for the opportunity to share this land in providing palliative care for adults, children and their families
