One mum shared how hospice care made a difference for her child and family
After the death of her daughter at Emily’s House, Cindy and her husband participated in a focus group where parents were asked to share their experience with end-of-life care: a home death, death in hospital, and death at a hospice.
She informally observed some differences between parents who received hospice care and those who had not:
“Although every parent was devastated by the death of their child, the parents who came from the hospital left empty-handed, with nothing to hold onto of their child.… The grief in the room from all these families was palpable. It was difficult to listen to them talk about their child’s death knowing all the legacy items that my family came home with that they didn’t. I truly believe that the care Natalie received, and the support my family received, and continues to receive has been invaluable to our grief journey. … Also, because we felt so connected to the care we received, it made us that much more comfortable with asking for and receiving grief therapy.”
