PAC Volunteer broke through barriers by engaging with art: a communications board
From the moment Amy walked through our door, she brought with her a calming energy and enthusiasm.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from a hospice volunteer, but Amy set that worry aside. On the very first day, Claude and I immediately felt at ease. She took the time to get to know us, and in return, we got to know her.
Claude, born in Paris, had a certain je ne sais quoi attitude and a dry sense of humour. Amy broke through that barrier by engaging him through his art, and listening attentively, especially as he grew weaker. She was always mindful of his mood and medical condition as they shifted.
Some of the activities she led included creating a communication board and drawing pictures to meet his needs. Ever the artist, Claude was captivated by Amy’s drawings, smiling and ‘reading’ her intent. During her visits, she would also sit by his bedside, chatting about his art or offering snacks.
Amy didn’t just care for Claude; she cared for me, too.
She observed our PSW assist Claude with toileting needs, and although her help wasn’t often needed, her willingness to help was greatly appreciated. I felt reassured knowing that Amy could assist Claude when I wasn’t there. This allowed me to take time for myself—whether for a massage or a walk—without worry.
When our farm share delivery arrived, she’d help unpack and prep the vegetables for the fridge. One of my daily concerns was preparing food for Claude as his ability to chew and swallow diminished. Amy inspired me with new ideas—soups! Cold soups! Smoothies! We also experimented together with nutritious foods for me, like cashew Caesar salad and gazpacho.
Amy offered more than just respite for both of us. She was a bright spot in our week, providing companionship and support that even inspired the PSWs.
Thank you, Amy, and PAC from the bottom of my heart. You truly made a difference in our lives.
Thank you to Philip Aziz Hospice for finding the perfect match for us.
